A few years ago if you had tried to convince me about going vintage shopping, I would have probably said no. People (including myself at some point) have so many misconceptions about this matter. I remember a friend asking me if I wasn’t afraid of who previously owned that piece. Also, very common in Latin America is to think about the “humor” of the previous owner. All those things and many more kept me away from even considering to get a previously owned or vintage piece. Thanks to Lorena from My Everyday Wear, I began to see this matter differently. I remember going with her to several stores here in Panama, and she showing me the history behind every piece and the value it had. Now she opened an online store named Closetmanias, where she showcases items she has acquired in vintage shops and markets from around the world. Thanks to her, I learned vintage shopping could successfully be done in Panama. You only need to consider a few things.
Do your research.
This is a very important step. Before heading out to a store, try to see whether in their social media pages or online what type of items they carry. Some have a curated archive to offer, while others bring in bulks. Knowing this beforehand will make you have an idea of what you may encounter. Now, if you are only going to explore you can skip this step.
Be prepared to try everything on.
You should do this every time you go out shopping. I know a lot of people get lazy about this, but when you go vintage shopping it is a must-do. Brand sizing has changed over time. Also, if you are buying a European brand, things fit differently there than they do here for our Latin curves. It is a must to try on everything you want to purchase so try going with clothing you can easily remove, or leggings and a tank top so you can try things on top of it.
Google.
I am sure I said this last time I talked about the topic. If you aren’t sure about the pricing, originality of the piece or simply don’t recognize the brand have your phone with you. This way you can make a quick Google search to look up any facts you aren’t too familiar with.
Besides Closetmanias, another store where you can vintage shop in Panama is Volver Shop. They also have a curated collection of great items. Vintage shopping in Panama can be done. You only have to do your research. If it will be your first time doing so, try finding someone else who has done it previously, as I did. Believe me, it will open a whole new world of shopping!

Hace unos años, si hubieras tratado de convencerme de ir de compras por piezas vintage o de segunda, probablemente te habría dicho que no. Muchas personas (incluyéndome a mí en algún momento) tienen conceptos errados sobre este asunto. Recuerdo que un amigo me preguntó si no tenía miedo de quién era el dueño anterior de esa pieza. Además, muy común en América Latina es pensar en el “humor” del dueño anterior. Todas esas cosas y muchas más me mantuvieron alejada de considerar comprar una pieza de segunda o vintage. Gracias a Lorena de My Everyday Wear, comencé a ver esto de manera diferente. Recuerdo haber ido con ella a varias tiendas aquí en Panamá, y me mostró la historia detrás de cada pieza y el valor que tenía. Ahora abrió una tienda en línea llamada Closetmanias, donde exhibe artículos que ha adquirido en tiendas y mercados vintage de todo el mundo. Gracias a ella, aprendí que las compras vintage se podían hacer con éxito en Panamá. Solo necesitas tener ciertas cosas en mente.
Investiga.
Este es un paso muy importante. Antes de dirigirte a una tienda, trata de ver si en sus páginas de redes sociales o en línea qué tipo de artículos llevan. Algunos eligen cuidadosamente sus artículos, mientras que otros traen grandes cantidades. Saber esto de antemano te hará tener una idea de lo que puedes encontrar. Ahora, si solo vas a explorar, puedes omitir este paso.
Prepárate para medirte todo.
Debes hacer esto cada vez que salgas de compras. Sé que mucha gente se vuelve floja al respecto, pero cuando vas a comprar piezas vintage es algo que debes hacer. Las tallas han cambiado con el tiempo. Además, si estás comprando una marca europea, las cosas encajan de manera diferente allí que en nuestras curvas latinas. Es imprescindible probarte todo lo que deseas comprar, así que intenta ir con ropa que te puedas quitar fácilmente, o leggins y un top de tiras para que puedas probarte cosas encima.
Estoy segura de que dije esto la última vez que hablé sobre el tema. Si no estas seguro sobre el precio, la originalidad de la pieza o simplemente no reconoces la marca ten tu teléfono contigo. De esta manera, puedes realizar una búsqueda rápida en Google para buscar cualquier información con la que no estés demasiado familiarizado.
