Travel Tips: South of Italy

Hello guys!

You think about the south of Italy and you usually think about pizza. From that area I only had thought about someday going to Capri but that’s about it. When planning this trip I wanted to take maximum advantage of every place I went to, so when I saw that if I got to Naples, I could see some iconic destinations my Italy list grew. Now, lets cover the important points:

Transportation from the airport:

We arrived from Barcelona on a direct flight to Naples International Airport. From the airport you take a bus (buy the ticket as soon as you get out of the airport (around 6 euros) to Piazza Garibaldi Station also known as Napoli Centrale. There you get the train to Pompeii. The ticket is less than 3 euros. It takes around one hour to arrive. You’ll get down in the last stop – Pompeii Scavi.

Where I stayed?

Villa Flora: It was very clean. The room had a mini kitchen that was well supplied. We cook breakfast and dinner while we were there since all the restaurants that were near by had tourist prices. Villa Flora had the perfect location. 5 minutes away for the Pompeii Ruins, the train station and the bus stop to Vesuvius.

Transportation

Getting a bus might take a while so we walked. To go to other cities I recommend getting the Artecard. It costs 32 euros and can be used for 3 days for the train station in the area. We bought it in Pompeii Scavi entrance and used it to move to Ercolano and Sorrento and then back to Napoli. The biggest advantage is that it gives you 2 free entrances to determined sites and museums. After you used the first two you get different types of discounts in the other ones. We used the two free tickets for Pompeii and Ercolano ruins.

What to see?

Pompeii Scavi

We did this the afternoon we arrived to Pompeii. It took us around 4 hours to see it all. Take a map of the place when you arrive since the site is huge.

Vesuvius

We took the bus that stops in front of the train station. For 3 euros it takes you all the way up to the ticket office of Vesuvius Park. Once there, you pay 10 euros to enter to the park. Take good pair of sneakers and a jacket just in case. It is a 40 minutes walk in a very steep heel. You can stay at the top for a while were there are two small shops where you can buy souvenirs, something to drink or eat. After you finish walk back down (the grabble makes that walk kind of hard) and wait for the bus. It’s 3 euros to go back down.

Ercolano Scavi

As I read somewhere it is the lesser know smaller brother of Pompeii. The site is way smaller but since it is a little farther away from Vesuvius (about 30 minutes from the Pompeii Scavi train stop) the ruins didn’t suffer that much. The structures are more complete than Pompeii so you can get a better idea of how they used to live.

Sorrento

I recommend just going for the day. It is a very beautiful town, just like you imagine the south of Italy will be. Walk around the coastline so you can see the city.

Naples

Where I stayed?

We went back to Naples the last two days. Here we stayed at Caesar Napoli. It was the cutest place. It is in the last floor of a building that is in the middle of the city. The building looks old but once you get in the place it is very modern. It has a terrace that overlooks the city.

Our hostess told us we could walk through the whole city. We were skeptic at first but she was correct. In half a day we saw it all, at least the touristic part. The Artecard didn’t work here but we didn’t see the need of using the metro.

Capri

From Naples the ticket of Capri was the cheapest. We paid around 40 euros roundtrip. A day or two will be perfect. Finding which boat to take can be confusing. It took us a while. The tickets for Capri are right by where you take the ferry. It takes 30 minutes to arrive to the island. Once you get there take the funicular. The tickets for it are sold to your right when you get off the ferry. It costs only 2 euros one way.

Cuando te hablan sobre el sur de Italia usualmente piensas en pizza. De esa área solo había pensado en ir a Capri algún día. Al planear este viaje, quería aprovechar al máximo cada lugar al que iba, así que cuando vi que si llegaba a Nápoles, podría ver algunos destinos icónicos mi lista de Italia creció. Ahora, cubramos los puntos importantes:

Transporte desde el aeropuerto:

Llegamos de Barcelona en un vuelo directo al aeropuerto internacional de Nápoles. Desde el aeropuerto tomas un autobús (compra el tiquete tan pronto salgas del aeropuerto (cuesta alrededor de 6 euros) hasta la estación Piazza Garibaldi, también conocida como Napoli Centrale. Allí tomarás el tren a Pompeya. Este tiquete cuesta menos de 3 euros. El viaje tarda aproximadamente una hora. Bajarás en la última parada: Pompeii Scavi.

Pompeya

¿A donde me quedé?

Villa Flora: estaba muy limpio. La habitación tenía una mini cocina que estaba bien equipada. Cocinamos el desayuno y la cena mientras estuvimos allí ya que todos los restaurantes que estaban cerca tenían precios de turistas. Villa Flora tenía la ubicación perfecta. 5 minutos para las ruinas de Pompeya, la estación de tren y la parada de autobús al Vesubio.

Transporte

Obtener un autobús puede tomar un tiempo así que caminamos en Pompeya. Para ir a otras ciudades, recomiendo comprar Artecard. Cuesta 32 euros y se puede utilizar durante 3 días ilimitadamente para la estación de tren de la zona. Lo compramos en la entrada de Scavi de Pompeya y lo utilizamos para ir a Ercolano y Sorrento y luego de regreso a Napoli. La mayor ventaja es que te ofrece 2 entradas gratuitas a determinados sitios y museos. Después de usar los primeros dos, obtienes diferentes tipos de descuentos en los otros. Usamos las dos entradas gratuitas para las ruinas de Pompeya y Ercolano.

¿Qué ver?

Pompeya Scavi

Lo hicimos la tarde en que llegamos. Nos tomó alrededor de 4 horas para verlo todo. Consigue un mapa del lugar cuando llegues ya que el sitio es enorme.

Vesubio

Tomamos el autobús que para frente a la estación de tren. Por 3 euros te lleva hasta la taquilla del Parque Vesuviu. Una vez allí, pagas 10 euros para ingresar al parque. Ponte un buen par de zapatillas y lleva un jacket por si acaso. Es una caminata de 40 minutos en una loma empinada. Puedes quedarte en la cima el tiempo que quieras. Hay dos pequeñas tiendas donde puedes comprar recuerdos, algo para beber o comer. Después de terminar, camina hacia abajo (las piedritas hace que caminar sea un poco difícil) y esperas el autobús. Son 3 euros para volver a bajar.

Ercolano 

Según investigue este es el hermano pequeño menos conocido de Pompeya. El sitio es mucho más pequeño, pero como está un poco más alejado del Vesubio (a unos 30 minutos de la parada del tren Pompeya Scavi) las ruinas no sufrieron tanto. Las estructuras están más completas que Pompeya por lo que puedes tener una mejor idea de cómo solían vivir.

Sorrento 

Recomiendo ir por el día. Es una ciudad muy hermosa, como imaginas que será el sur de Italia. Camina por la costa para que puedas ver la ciudad.

Nápoles

¿A donde me quedé?

Volvimos a Nápoles los últimos dos días. Aquí nos quedamos en Caesar Napoli. Fue el lugar más lindo. Está en el último piso de un edificio que está en el medio de la ciudad. El edificio parece viejo, pero una vez que te encuentras en el lugar, es muy moderno. Tiene una terraza que da a la ciudad.

Nuestra anfitriona nos dijo que podíamos caminar toda la ciudad. Al principio no le creímos, pero tenía razón. En medio día lo vimos todo, al menos la parte turística. El Artecard no funcionaba aquí, pero no tuvimos la necesidad de usar el metro.

Capri

Desde Nápoles, el boleto de Capri era más barato. Pagamos alrededor de 40 euros de ida y vuelta. Un día o dos para Capri esta mas que bien. Encontrar qué barco tomar puede ser confuso ya que no se compra en la billetera normal. Las entradas para Capri se compran justo donde se toma el ferry. Toma 30 minutos en llegar a la isla. Una vez que llegues allí, tome el funicular. Las entradas las venden a tu derecha cuando te bajas del ferry. Cuesta solo 2 euros por trayecto.
