As you may have noticed on my Instagram account, I’m in Spain. I’m having a great time visiting friends and exploring. One of the things that excited me about Europe is the hundreds of years of history that can easily be found in every corner. The last time I was on this side of the world was 12 years ago in a school exchange program. Back then I was in awe of the history, art and everything I was able to experience, that I promise myself I was coming back. I didn’t think that 12 years will go by before my return. For the last 3 years, I said to myself I was going to do it but it was not until now that I finally found the time to do so. Initially, I was going to do the trip by myself but one of my best friends decided to join which just reassured me this was the perfect time to go. Even though buying the ticket was done quite quickly everything else took time. Below I tell you how I planned my trip while staying on a budget.
Make a budget
The first thing to do is to establish how much you want to spend. This will be very important before you choose what to visit and where to stay. The best part is that you know that when you come back you still have money in your account.
Choose an area to explore
At the beginning of the year when I promised myself I was going to Europe, I did a list of the countries I wanted to visit. After that, I googled Europe and divided each country by area (i.e. northern, southern, east and west Europe). This way when I officially began to plan my trip I would get to choose an area to explore. If the countries are near to each other it makes it way easier for you to stay on a budget. Airfare expenses will be way less.
Decide what things are a priority for you
When I travel I love to try new food and stay in a clean space. I don’t need a 5-star hotel, but I need to know the hostel, Airbnb, hotel or wherever I’m staying is clean. This might spike up a little bit the prices but not by that much. Do a list of your priorities, do your research and make sure you are getting the best option of what you can afford.
Do your research
There are many things you can do for free, many offers you can take advantage of, and many other things you can do if you do your research. Do it with time. My friend and I met several times the weeks prior to the trip and went through different travel sites to find the best prices for transportation, museums, archeological sites and more.
Have an itinerary ready
I love to plan everything; it gives me peace of mind. You will know what is the best way to get from one place to the other beforehand and will have an idea of what to expect thanks to other travelers’ reviews and more. Do your research about the city custom and culture to avoid any conflicts. If you go prepared you won’t waste time planning what to do each day, there won’t be any surprises and you will know how your budget will be allocated.

Como habrán notado en mi cuenta de Instagram, estoy en España. La estoy pasando muy bien junto amigos y explorando. Una de las cosas que me encanta de Europa son los cientos de años de historia que se pueden encontrar fácilmente en cada esquina. La última vez que estuve en este lado del mundo fue hace 12 años en un programa de intercambio escolar. Recuerdo que me encanto la historia, el arte y todo lo que viví, que me prometí que regresaría. No pensé que pasarían 12 años antes de que esto sucediera. Durante los últimos 3 años, me dije que iba a hacerlo, pero no tuve tiempo hasta ahora. Inicialmente, iba a hacer el viaje yo sola, pero uno de mis mejores amigos decidió unirse, lo que me confirmó que había tomado la decisión correcta. A pesar de que comprar el boleto fue hecho bastante rápido todo lo demás tomó tiempo. A continuación, te cuento cómo planifiqué mi viaje con un presupuesto bajo.
Haz un presupuesto
Lo primero que debes hacer es establecer cuánto quieres gastar. Esto será muy importante antes de elegir qué visitar y dónde quedarse. La mejor parte es que sabrás que cuando regreses todavía tienes dinero en tu cuenta.
Elige un área para explorar
A principios de año cuando me prometí que iría a Europa hice una lista de los países que quería visitar. Después de eso, busqué en Google y dividí cada país por área (es decir, norte, sur, este y oeste de Europa). De esta manera, cuando oficialmente comencé a planificar mi viaje, podría elegir un área para explorar. Si los países están cerca el uno del otro, es más fácil mantenerse dentro de un presupuesto. Los gastos de pasaje aéreo serán mucho menos.
Decide qué cosas son una prioridad
Cuando viajo, me encanta probar la comida local y quedarme en un lugar limpio. No necesito un hotel de 5 estrellas, pero necesito saber que el hostal, Airbnb, el hotel o donde sea que me quedé esté limpio. Esto podría subir un poco los precios pero no tanto. Haz una lista de tus prioridades para que puedas investigar y asegurarte de obtener la mejor opción de lo que puedes pagar.
Investiga
Hay muchas cosas que puedes hacer de forma gratuita, muchas ofertas que puede aprovechar y muchas otras cosas que puedes hacer si investigas con tiempo. Mi amigo y yo nos reunimos varias veces las semanas previas al viaje y nos metimos en diferentes páginas de viaje para encontrar los mejores precios de transporte, museos, sitios arqueológicos y más.
Ten un itinerario listo
Me encanta planear todo con anticipación; me da tranquilidad. También es bueno saber cómo ir de un lugar a otro de antemano, leer los consejos de otros viajeros y más. También es importante conocer la cultura del lugar al que te diriges para evitar conflictos. Si vas preparado, no perderás tiempo planificando qué hacer cada día, sabrás cómo asignar tu presupuesto y no te perderás de nada.
