Cartagena Tour Guide

Hello guys!

As my Instagram Cartagena posts come to an end, so do my blog posts. Before going, my brother and I asked several friends that have gone on repeated times what should we do while we were there. They told us about several restaurants, places, and things to do. Sadly, we weren’t able to do everything but the things I’m telling you about below are definitely a must for a first timer!

Tours

If it is your first time going I recommend taking a city tour. The best way to do so is in a “chiva”. They used to be part of the city public transportation years ago and now they are mostly used for tourism. In the tour I took we visited many areas of the city including El Castillo de San Felipe and La Ciudad Histórica or Ciudad Amurallada. The tour was about 4 hours long but it was very informative and a fun way to get to know the city for a really good price (it was around $20.00 per person)

Chiva Parrandera

I thought all “chivas” were the same and I was clearly mistaken. In college, I went to my fair share in Panama. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, they are basically party buses. The “chiva” in Cartagena was completely different. It was the same one as the one we took the tour in. In our row, there was a Chilean couple and 2 guys from Mexico. They were great so we ended up hanging out the whole night. There was a live band in one of the rows, open bar with Colombian rum and a stop to taste food from the region. The host did an amazing job cheering us up, giving some historical facts and making everyone dance and have a good time.

Islas del Rosario (includes Isla del Encanto, Isla del Sol e Isla Pirata)

Every single person told us this was a must. I have to say if you visit Cartagena make sure to schedule a visit to one of the islands of Las Islas del Rosario. To avoid any confusion this is a group of islands, being Isla del Encanto the biggest one. The second largest is Isla del Sol and the Isla Pirata is the smallest one. According to what they told me at the hotel when I was trying to figure out which one to go to what changes is the amount of beach each one actually has. Apparently, the other islands are smaller. Either way, make sure to visit one of this islands. The water and the beach are completely different to the one in the city shoreline.

Bocagrande

My hotel, as well as many others, was in this area. If you want to live the full experience I recommend you stay in this area. You will be able to reach the old town (Ciudad Amurallada) in 5-10 minutes and you will be in the middle of the new area as well. The beach will be right in front of the hotel where you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets! Bocagrande also has a bunch of hidden restaurants and boutiques where you can find good deals. For more affordable options make sure to stroll around this area.

Convento la Popa

If you want to get a good view of the whole city this is a must. The monastery is located in one of the highest points of Cartagena. This allows you to get a complete view of the different parts of the city while exploring the beautiful architecture of the place.

Restaurants

My favorite ones where in La Ciudad Amurallada. Some of them were:
Mila – Delicious deserts for a great price.

Pepe Anca – If you want to take a break from seafood, here you will find delicious steaks that are cooked to perfection.

Cevichería – Everyone talks about this place. The ceviches were delicious but what we really enjoyed was the black paella.

Paletas Artesanales – I wasn’t that excited about going here but we follow my brother recommendation and it was delicious. I ate a cookies popsicle that was great. So bad we discovered it the last day!

Places I want to go when I go back:
– Eat at Club de Pesca and Juan del Mar
– Visit the hotels Charleston and Boheme
– See the sunset on the wall of La Ciudad Amurallada

Al igual que mis posts de Instagram de Cartagena llegan a su fin, también lo hacen mis posts del blog sobre el tema. Antes de ir, mi hermano y yo le preguntamos a varios amigos que han ido en repetidas ocasiones qué nos recomendaban hacer. Nos dieron un largo listado de restaurantes y lugares que visitar. Lamentablemente, no pudimos hacer todo, ¡pero las cosas de las que les hablaré a continuación son un MUST para aquellos que van por primera vez.

Tours

Si es la primera vez que vas, te recomiendo tomar un tour por la ciudad. La mejor manera de hacerlo es en una chiva. Solían ser parte del transporte público de la ciudad hace años y ahora se utilizan para el turismo. En el recorrido que realicé visitamos muchas áreas de la ciudad, incluyendo El Castillo de San Felipe y La Ciudad Histórica o Ciudad Amurallada. El tour duró aproximadamente 4 horas, pero fue muy informativo y una forma divertida de conocer la ciudad a un precio realmente bueno (alrededor de $20.00 por persona)

Chiva Parrandera

Pensé que todas las “chivas” eran iguales y estaba claramente equivocada. En la universidad, fui a muchas. Para aquellos que no saben de lo que estoy hablando, básicamente son autobuses de fiesta. La “chiva” en Cartagena era completamente diferente. Era el mismo en el que hicimos la gira. En nuestra fila, había una pareja chilena y 2 muchachos de México. Estuvieron genial así que terminamos pasando la noche entera juntos. Había una banda en vivo en una de las filas, open bar con ron colombiano y una parada para probar la comida de la región. El anfitrión hizo un trabajo increíble animándonos, dando algunos datos históricos y haciendo que todos bailaran y la pasaran bien.

Islas del Rosario (incluye Isla del Encanto, Isla del Sol e Isla Pirata)

Todos nos dijeron que era obligatorio ir. Debo decir que si visitas Cartagena, asegúrate de programar una visita a una de Las Islas del Rosario. Para evitar confusiones, se trata de un grupo de islas, siendo Isla del Encanto la más grande. La segunda más grande es Isla del Sol y la Isla Pirata es la más pequeña. De acuerdo con lo que me dijeron en el hotel cuando estaba averiguando a cuál ir lo que varia entre una isla y otra es la cantidad de área de playa que cada una tiene. Aparentemente, las otras islas son más pequeñas. Asegúrate de visitar una de ellas. El agua y la playa son completamente diferentes a la que está en la costa de la ciudad.

Bocagrande

Mi hotel, al igual que muchos otros, estaba en esta área. Si quieres vivir la experiencia completa, te recomiendo que te quedes aquí. Podrás llegar a la Ciudad Amurallada en 5-10 minutos y estarás en el medio de la nueva área también. ¡La playa estará justo en frente del hotel, donde podrás disfrutar de las hermosas puestas de sol! Bocagrande también tiene una gran cantidad de restaurantes y boutiques donde puedes encontrar buenas ofertas. Para obtener más opciones asequibles, asegúrate de pasear por esta área.

Convento la Popa

Si deseas poder ver toda la ciudad, esta es una visita obligada. El monasterio está ubicado en uno de los puntos más altos de Cartagena. Esto te permite tener una vista completa de las diferentes partes de la ciudad mientras exploras la hermosa arquitectura del lugar.

Restaurantes

Mis favoritos estaban en La Ciudad Amurallada. Algunos de ellos fueron:
Mila – deliciosos postres a buen precio.

Pepe Anca: si desea tomar un descanso de los mariscos, aquí encontrarás deliciosos cortes de carne cocinados a la perfección.

Cevichería – Todo el mundo habla de este lugar. Los ceviches eran deliciosos, pero lo que realmente disfrutamos fue la paella negra.

Paletas Artesanales – No quería ir, pero mi hermano insistió y estuvo delicioso. Comí una paleta de galletas que estaba genial. ¡Qué mal que lo descubrimos el último día!

Lugares a los que quiero ir cuando vuelva:
– Comer en el Club de Pesca y Juan del Mar
– Visitar los hoteles Charleston y Boheme
– Ver la puesta de sol en el muro de La Ciudad Amurallada
